{"id":680169,"date":"2024-07-18T15:10:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T05:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/?p=680169"},"modified":"2024-07-18T15:55:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T05:55:26","slug":"six-months-of-wins-for-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/six-months-of-wins-for-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Six months of wins for human rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Just half way through the year, Amnesty International has contributed to a series of human rights wins, with people released from prison, laws changed, and justice served!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here in Australia, we celebrated Julian Assange touching down on home soil after being a part of Amnesty International\u2019s campaign since he was imprisoned. When the Australian government suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency &#8211; a lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza &#8211; you supported our campaign and repeated calls until funding was resumed on March 14. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We campaigned for the freedom of Iranian human rights activist Toomaj Salehi and saw his death sentence overturned. And, we took a significant step closer to an Australian Human Rights Act when the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights recommended our Federal Government legislated one &#8211; noting your 4,000 submissions and 29,000 signatures. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Australia and around the world, supporters have taken action time and time again and proved that people power changes lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t wait to see what the rest of the year holds for human rights around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-january\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffff00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">January<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Norway<\/strong>: Over the last few years, Norway has endured criticism from international human rights bodies for its treatment of people in prison with mental health problems. Isolation is widely used, and suicide rates are high. Last year, Amnesty Norway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AmnestyNorge\/videos\/6594661780571004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigned for prisoners&#8217; rights<\/a>, which led to the government significantly increasing resources to improve conditions, reducing the use of isolation, after the budget came into force in January<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thailand\/Russia: <\/strong>Members of the Russian rock band Bi-2, detained in Thailand and facing potential deportation to Russia, were allowed to leave Thailand safely. This followed a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/01\/thailand-russia-prevent-deportation-of-russian-rock-band-members-at-risk-of-persecution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public outcry<\/a>, along with calls from Amnesty International. The musicians risked persecution in Russia due to their outspoken anti-war stance and the previous designation of one of its members as a \u201cforeign agent\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Belgium:<\/strong> A bill introduced by Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne that would have under-minded the right to protest in Belgium was withdrawn. This followed demands made by trade unions and civil society organizations, including Amnesty International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-february\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffff00\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">February<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Belgium:<\/strong> At the beginning of February, the Walloon government announced it was suspending arms export licences to Israel. This decision was in response to calls from a coalition of civil society organizations, in which Amnesty International played a central role. Although the military equipment was not supposed to be used by Israeli security forces, the Walloon authorities took the decision to suspend the exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Iraq:<\/strong> On 17 February, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I) authorities released journalist Guhdar Zebari after more than three years of unjust imprisonment during which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde14\/7732\/2024\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amnesty International campaigned for his release.<\/a> In a message to Amnesty International, Guhdar Zebari\u2019s lawyer thanked the movement for their efforts which he said had a positive impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Andorra:<\/strong> Human rights defender Vanessa Mendoza Cortes was finally acquitted after facing trial for speaking out against Andorra\u2019s total ban on abortion, marking a huge victory for women\u2019s rights.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of Amnesty supporters took action, showing their support for Vanessa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/274759_Vanessa-Mendoza-Cortes_-Woman-Human-Rights-Defender-Andorra-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-680261\" style=\"width:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/274759_Vanessa-Mendoza-Cortes_-Woman-Human-Rights-Defender-Andorra-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/274759_Vanessa-Mendoza-Cortes_-Woman-Human-Rights-Defender-Andorra-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/274759_Vanessa-Mendoza-Cortes_-Woman-Human-Rights-Defender-Andorra-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Vanessa Mendoza Cortes is a human rights defender and president of the Association Stop Violence in Andorra. <strong>\u00a9<\/strong>Associacio Stop Violencies<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI want to personally thank the more than 70,000 people who have taken action to support me and put pressure on the Andorran authorities,\u201d said Vanessa. \u201cYou are part of this collective and peaceful victory. Despite the tough years, I feel lucky to walk side by side with you. Our strength is in our solidarity and in standing up for each other\u2019s rights.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global: At a ceremony in The Hague, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/treatydatabase.overheid.nl\/en\/Treaty\/Details\/013717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">34 states<\/a> signed the new landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/05\/global-states-agree-landmark-treaty-to-help-deliver-justice-to-victims-of-genocide-crimes-against-humanity-and-war-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ljubljana-Hague Convention<\/strong><\/a>, negotiated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/02\/global-amnesty-international-calls-for-adoption-of-new-treaty-on-cooperation-in-prosecuting-crimes-under-international-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a year earlier<\/a> to help deliver justice to victims of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The treaty strengthens the framework of international justice by providing new tools and better enabling states to cooperate with each other in cases involving crimes under international law. It will help ensure there are fewer \u2018safe havens\u2019 for those suspected of criminal responsibility and is an important advance against impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senegal:<\/strong> The Senegalese authorities released more than 600 people who were detained for having participated in or calling for demonstrations, or for being perceived as supporting the main opposition party. Amnesty has been campaigning for the release of people who had simply exercised their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mauritania:<\/strong> Youba Siby, a Senegalese citizen of Mauritanian origin, was arrested in Senegal on 14 September 2023 after criticizing the son of a high-level Mauritanian politician on social networks. It later emerged he had been extradited to Mauritania and was being held in prison without access to a lawyer, where he was sentenced to four-years\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On hearing of Youba\u2019s arrest, Amnesty\u2019s regional team shared the contact of a trusted human rights lawyer who took on his case for a small fee. Youba was freed in February and returned to Senegal. As he had lost his income and home, Amnesty supported him to re-establish his small business and cover some living costs for his transition back to freedom. Youba expresses his sincerest gratitude to Amnesty and its supporters for our help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greece:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/02\/greece-same-sex-marriage-recognition-key-milestone-in-fight-against-homophobia-and-transphobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greece\u2019s Parliament adopted a bill recognizing same-sex marriage<\/a>. This was an emblematic step seeking to ensure marriage equality for LGBTI people and allowing same-sex couples to adopt. Amnesty International Greece actively supported this legislation by submitting a written letter to the Greek government calling for change. While Amnesty International Greece acknowledges the importance of the bill, it is calling on the Greek government to introduce further legislative changes to guarantee full equality for LGBTI people and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Greece:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/02\/greece-same-sex-marriage-recognition-key-milestone-in-fight-against-homophobia-and-transphobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greece\u2019s Parliament adopted a bill recognizing same-sex marriage<\/a>. This was an emblematic step seeking to ensure marriage equality for LGBTI people and allowing same-sex couples to adopt. Amnesty International Greece actively supported this legislation by submitting a written letter to the Greek government calling for change. TotalEnergies has been one of the main sponsors of the Brussels 20km since 2004 and the French multinational has benefited from the positive image of this popular race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU:<\/strong> Dunja Mijatovi\u0107, the Council of Europe\u2019s Commissioner for Human Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/commissioner\/-\/protecting-the-human-rights-of-sex-workers#_ftn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called for a human rights-based approach to sex work<\/a>, following consultations with sex workers across Europe, representative organizations and civil society organizations. In her paper, she cited Amnesty International\u2019s research on the violence faced by sex workers. Amnesty International will continue campaigning for decriminalization of sex work and the protection of the human rights of sex workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Switzerland: <\/strong>Following years of campaigning for justice, activist Mohamed Wa Baile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/02\/switzerland-court-decision-on-ethnic-profiling-case-must-send-clear-message-on-racial-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won his case<\/a> against Switzerland at the European Court of Human Rights, on discriminatory identity checks and Switzerland\u2019s serious failings in the prevention of ethnic profiling. Amnesty International submitted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.ch\/fr\/themes\/racisme\/docs\/amnesty-intervient-cour-europeenne-droits-homme\/210121_tpi_wa-baile_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third-party intervention<\/a> in the case. This judgement represents a victory for Wa Baile and for racialized communities in Switzerland and Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU: <\/strong>The European Parliament adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2024-0071_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resolution<\/a> on Iran, echoing Amnesty International\u2019s recommendations for EU states to initiate criminal investigations against Iranian officials responsible for serious human rights violations through <a href=\"https:\/\/ijrcenter.org\/cases-before-national-courts\/domestic-exercise-of-universal-jurisdiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">universal jurisdiction.<\/a> The European Parliament echoed our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/01\/iran-executions-of-protester-with-mental-disability-and-kurdish-man-mark-plunge-into-new-realms-of-cruelty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calls<\/a> for the abolition of the death penalty and the release of those arbitrarily detained in Iran. It condemned the appalling detention conditions in Iran and the widespread use of torture, including sexual violence, reflecting Amnesty International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/12\/iran-security-forces-used-rape-and-other-sexual-violence-to-crush-woman-life-freedom-uprising-with-impunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">findings<\/a> of security forces\u2019 weaponization of rape and other sexual violence to crush the \u201cWomen Life Freedom\u201d uprising, and the continued impunity for these crimes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-march\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffff00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">March<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Japan:<\/strong> The Tokyo District Court and Sapporo High Court separately made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/03\/japan-groundbreaking-same-sex-marriage-rulings-a-long-awaited-victory-for-lgbti-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historic decisions<\/a> on two same-sex marriage cases, following lobbying from Amnesty International. By recognizing that the government\u2019s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, the rulings made clear that such discrimination has no place in Japanese society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU:<\/strong> At the start of the year, several governments decided to suspend funding to United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza. In response to these alarming decisions, Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.eu\/news\/gaza-the-eu-must-urgently-continue-funding-unrwa-to-avoid-exacerbating-suffering-of-palestinians-facing-serious-risk-of-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocated for the EU and member states to resume their funding<\/a> without delay. In March, following our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.eu\/news\/the-eu-and-member-states-must-maintain-funding-for-unrwa-amid-alarming-signs-of-genocide-against-palestinians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeated calls<\/a>, the European Commission announced it would resume disbursement of lifesaving <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_1285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU funds to UNRWA<\/a>, and has now paid the first two tranches. All the EU member states that had suspended their funding have now resumed it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Burkina Faso:<\/strong> On 1 December 2023, human rights defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/01\/burkina-faso-free-human-rights-defender-daouda-diallo-and-end-discriminatory-conscription-of-independent-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daouda Diallo<\/a> was apprehended by security agents and driven to an unknown location, and subjected to enforced disappearance. Amnesty International issued an urgent appeal, calling for his release. In March, Daouda was freed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-680263\" style=\"width:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo--900x900.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/295357_Daouda-Diallo-.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Daouda Diallo is a pharmacist by training and a committed human rights defender. \u00a9 Private<br><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/afr60\/7830\/2024\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> release<\/a>, he said: \u201cI would like to thank Amnesty International and all those who mobilized and called for my release. These appeals were a light in the solitude of my ordeal and a reminder that I was not alone. Let us remain united in our commitment to defend the principles of justice, equality and dignity for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>France:<\/strong> The French Congress voted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/03\/france-enshrining-abortion-in-the-constitution-a-bulwark-against-anti-rights-movements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enshrine abortion<\/a> as a guaranteed freedom in the French Constitution. Amnesty France campaigned for the change together with other national organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Belgium:<\/strong> Leading Congolese journalist Stanis Bujakera was released on 19 March after six months in prison. Stanisa was arrested on 8 September 2023 and charged with &#8220;spreading rumours&#8221; and &#8220;disseminating false information&#8221; after media outlet <em>Jeune Afrique<\/em> published an article containing allegations about the involvement of Congolese intelligence services in the murder of opposition politician Ch\u00e9rubin Okende. Amnesty International Belgium, together with others, called for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/03\/drc-authorities-must-immediately-free-detained-journalist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanis Bujakera&#8217;s release<\/a>, circulating a petition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-april\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffff00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">April<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myanmar:<\/strong> The UN Human Rights Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/04\/un-human-rights-council-resolution-on-myanmar-takes-crucial-stand-against-deadly-jet-fuel-supply-chain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adopted a resolution<\/a> on Myanmar that for the first time called on UN member states to refrain from the export, sale or transfer of jet fuel to Myanmar. This decision followed years of advocacy across the globe led by Amnesty International in close collaboration with Myanmar civil society organizations, as well as via Amnesty\u2019s 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/research\/2022\/11\/myanmar-the-supply-chain-fueling-war-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Deadly Cargo\u2019<\/a> report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Argentina<\/strong>: A prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/amnistia.org.ar\/el-influencer-emanuel-danann-debera-hacer-tareas-comunitarias-por-violencia-de-genero-y-hostigamiento-contra-una-periodista-en-redes-sociales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Argentinian influencer was sentenced to community service<\/a>, after he was found guilty of systematic online gender-based harassment against journalist, Marina Abiuso.  Amnesty Argentina supported Marina throughout her trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I am a journalist. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press seem to me to be fundamental values. Italy will now be required to take steps to ensure adequate, non-segregated and non-discriminatory housing for Roma, and to provide remedies for those who have experienced discrimination and segregation.. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global:<\/strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zabK9-dWZoc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dreaming in the Shadows<\/a><\/em> is a 15-minute documentary film made by the independent Ukrainian director Marina Chankova and commissioned by Amnesty International. he documentary features three older people in Ukraine who have been displaced or are still living in areas directly impacted by the war. The film was selected as a finalist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaffest.com\/filmler\/dreamingintheshadows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UAFF film festival in Turkey<\/a>, and was selected to screen at the <a href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/TheNewsFest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">NewsFest film festival <\/a>in California, USA. It also received an award of merit in the <a href=\"https:\/\/accoladecompetition.org\/awards-of-recognition-june-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disability Issues and Woman Filmmaker <\/a>categories at the Accolade Global Film Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-4 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Greece<\/strong>: Nine survivors of the 2023 Pylos shipwreck \u2013 in which over 600 migrants and refugees lost their lives \u2013 faced trial at the Kalamata Criminal Court on charges including causing the shipwreck and smuggling. Amnesty International\u2019s research, conducted jointly with HRW, found indications that the shipwreck was caused by the Greek coast guard, who attempted to tow the migrant boat. During a research mission, Amnesty discovered that boreholes built by the company were causing water pollution. There were high levels of nitrates in the samples taken (110 mg\/l for the sample 1 and 120 mg\/l for the sample 2), which were well above safe levels (50 milligrams per litre) recommended by the World Health Organization. (Following Amnesty\u2019s findings, Sierra Leone authorities sent a letter to the company requesting that they respond to our concerns. According to a recent report from an independent consultant in June 2024, the levels of nitrate in the water are now within WHO guidelines for drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thailand<\/strong>: Thailand\u2019s Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/06\/thailand-passing-of-marriage-equality-bill-a-triumphant-moment-for-lgbti-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed the marriage equality bill<\/a>, taking a historic step towards becoming the first country in South-East Asia to legalize marriage for LGBTI couples, following sustained campaigning from Amnesty International. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Bill 2024, which criminalizes marriage for anyone under the age of 18, seeks to protect girls from a harmful practice. Amnesty International contributed to this historic decision through its campaigning and human rights education project, which involved educating communities on the harmful practices of child marriage and FGM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Republic of Congo:<\/strong> Following a report from Amnesty, the Ministry of Environment suspended the operations of the recycling company Metssa Congo, on the grounds of the potential risks to the health of the local population and the surrounding environment. While drafting its report, Amnesty supported residents to take blood tests showing high levels of lead in people (including children) living near the factory. Amnesty also paid for the legal procedures. Following the suspension, Cyrille Ndembi, President of the Vindoulou Residents&#8217; Collective, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We spent a calm and peaceful night, with no noise, smells, smoke or vibrations, and no stress or anxiety. Once again, thank you!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yemen<\/strong>: On 21 June, the Huthi de facto authorities released Baha&#8217;i human rights activist Abdullah al-Olofi after he spent more than a year in arbitrary detention. On 23 May 2023, Huthi armed forces stormed a peaceful gathering of the Baha&#8217;is in a private residence in Sana&#8217;a, and arbitrarily detained 17 people, including Abdullah al-Olofi. Amnesty has been campaigning for the unconditional and immediate release of all those detained ever since. The Huthi de facto authorities also released Yemeni judge Abdulwahab Mohammad Qatran after he spent more than five months in arbitrary detention at the Huthi-run security and intelligence detention centre in Sana&#8217;a, Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a message to Amnesty International, Abdelwahab Mohammad Qatran thanked the organization for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde31\/8178\/2024\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigning for his release<\/a> and standing in solidarity with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UK\/USA:<\/strong> Julian Assange finally reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/06\/media-freedom-continues-assange-plea-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plea deal<\/a> with the US authorities after spending five years in a high security prison in the UK. Assange pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, leading to a sentence of 62 months, which Julian Assange has already served.
