It demonstrates what steps governments and others can take to meet these challenges and improve people&#8217;s lives across the world. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-world\">In the world <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The themes that emerged most strongly from Amnesty International\u2019s research on 156 countries in 2022 and are deeply interconnected. We saw new or renewed conflicts break out and prolonged ones persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The right to protest <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The year 2022 was marked by heavy-handed repression of the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly. Those defending human rights and exercising their right to protest often bore the brunt of such repression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/explainer-ukraine-and-mounting-threat-of-russian-invasion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>, crackdowns on the freedoms of expression and association were associated with armed conflict. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/afghanistan-one-year-of-the-talibans-broken-promises-draconian-restrictions-and-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/myanmar-cease-persecution-of-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Myanmar<\/a>, crackdowns followed armed takeovers of government. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gender-based violence<\/strong> <strong>and sexual and reproductive rights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Gender-based violence against women, girls and LGBTI people remained a global issue and, despite some action to improve legislative protections, there were some notable setbacks in 2022. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the USA, several states passed laws to ban or curtail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/usa-if-confirmed-supreme-court-decision-could-endanger-abortion-rights-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">access to abortion<\/a>, which ignited threats to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/abortion-rights-in-australia-and-why-you-should-care-about-roe-v-wade\/#:~:text=What%20are%20your%20rights%20in,procedure%20from%20the%20criminal%20code.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reproductive rights<\/a> around the world. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/afghanistan-taliban-destroying-lives-of-women-and-girls-new-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan<\/a>, the Taliban forbade women and girls from travelling without a male chaperone, banned them from public parks and prohibited them from tertiary education or from working for NGOs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Economic and social rights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Although many countries began to emerge from the shadow of Covid-19, others continued to face its effects. Economic crises associated with the impact of the pandemic led to rocketing price rises for fuel and increased pressure on health and other social services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Australia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The right to protest <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/pledge-to-protect-the-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new laws restricting<\/a> the right to peaceful protest. In August 2022, police in New South Wales <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/millions-say-no-to-jailing-of-peaceful-climate-activists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested 34 peaceful protesters<\/a> and a legal observer at a demonstration in Sydney against government inaction on climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indigenous rights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>First Nations people remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/overrepresentation-explainer-first-nations-kids-are-26-times-more-likely-to-be-incarcerated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overrepresented<\/a> in the prison population, despite targets to reduce the number of incarceration. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people died in custody in 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In September 2022, the UN Human Rights Committee found that Australia\u2019s failure to adequately protect Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders against impacts from climate change violated their human rights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In September 2022, the government proposed to establish the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, a body to make representations directly to government on issues affecting First Nations peoples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Children&#8217;s rights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Australia continued to detain children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/why-we-need-to-raise-the-minimum-age-of-criminal-responsibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as young as 10<\/a>. First Nations children, who represented 6% of the population aged 10 to 17, constituted 50% of those in youth detention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe title=\"Why is Australia locking up so many First Nations kids?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r5vXtYrFO-U?start=65&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The rights of child detainees, and during transfer, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/moving-kids-with-complex-needs-to-maximum-security-prison-shameful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violated<\/a> with increased rates of self-harm among children. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In August 2022, allegations of sexual and physical abuse against children held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/amnesty-international-calls-for-the-closure-of-ashley-youth-detention-centre-in-light-of-the-latest-evidence-of-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ashley Youth Detention Centre<\/a> in Tasmania emerged during an official investigation, prompting calls for the immediate closure of the facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Refugee rights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In March 2022, Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/new-zealand-deal-accepted-gameover-campaign-update-from-craig-foster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accepted an offer<\/a> by New Zealand to resettle refugees, but indefinite detention of asylum seekers offshore, and in Australia, continued. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In July 2022, an Iranian-Kurdish refugee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/refugee-moz-azimitabar-is-taking-the-australian-government-to-court-over-its-detention-regime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mostafa \u201cMoz\u201d Azimitabar<\/a>, challenged the legality of his 15-month-long detention in hotels, dubbed by the government as \u201calternative places of detention\u201d. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe title=\"Moz: Taking the Australian government to court\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gUcAdCM7nrs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Climate justice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In September 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/refugee-moz-azimitabar-is-taking-the-australian-government-to-court-over-its-detention-regime\/\">Climate Change Act<\/a> was adopted and new carbon reduction targets were enshrined in legislation, but fell short of required average global levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Human Rights Act<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In March 2023, a parliamentary inquiry was launched to investigate updating the Federal Human Rights framework with a focus on implementing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/explainer-why-we-need-a-human-rights-act\/#:~:text=A%20Human%20Rights%20Act%20will,when%20their%20rights%20are%20abused\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Right Act<\/a>. This would ensure everyone in Australia has the same fundamental human rights in law, and provide an accountability framework for all Australians to be able to protect and defend their rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On a domestic level, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/what-we-do\/our-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amnesty International Australia\u2019s 2025 Vision<\/a> looks ahead with a clear vision of how we will continue to challenge injustice and create real, lasting change on key issues: Indigenous justice, refugee rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, women\u2019s rights, climate justice and anti-racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a global level, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Amnesty-International-Annual-Report_The-State-of-the-Worlds-Human-Rights_202223_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amnesty International Annual Report 2022\/23<\/a> details the concerns and calls for actions to governments and others.
