It marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 \u2014 a list of the rights everyone around the world should enjoy. 74 years later, the fight to uphold our rights is far from over. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahsa Amini, the Religious Discrimination Bill, #GameOver. This year we saw freedom and equality continuously under threat, and people around the world courageously fighting for the recognition of their fundamental rights.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the declaration\u2019s international credibility, the standards outlined in it are sometimes difficult to enforce. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important for ordinary people to speak out against human rights violations whenever they happen \u2014 this is how we keep governments and leaders across the world accountable and we move closer to a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every action you take helps to free the wrongfully imprisoned, rewrite unjust laws and hold the powerful to account. Together our voices are powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the human rights wins of 2022: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-january\"><strong>January<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Iranian human rights defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/women-risking-everything-to-make-a-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atena Daemi<\/a> was released after five years imprisonment under trumped-up charges for her courageous advocacy to end the death penalty. More than 22,000 Australians sent solidarity messages to Atena and campaigned for her release during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/write-for-rights-wrap-up-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Write for Rights 2018<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019d like to thank you for your empathy, solidarity, support and struggles all these years which have been by family\u2019s moral support and my inspiration. I hope that we\u2019ll achieve our first and last wish, which is freedom, public awareness and the realisation of human rights.<\/p>\n<cite>Atena Daemi<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>February<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/proposed-religious-discrimination-bills-entrench-division-for-generations-to-come-a-human-rights-act-is-needed-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Religious Discrimination Bill<\/a> was shelved after months of campaigning, direct advocacy with key politicians and through working in coalition with Equality Australia and other LGBTQIA+, disability and health organisations. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/submission-religious-discrimination-bill-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submission<\/a> drafted by Amnesty\u2019s New South Wales Rainbow Group was a powerful advocacy tool in achieving this outcome. <br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/support-a-human-rights-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign the petition<\/a> to call on the government to implement a Human Rights Act so that basic human rights are never up for debate. A national-level protection will mean everyone\u2019s rights are protected so that we may live with the dignity and respect we all deserve. Amnesty started campaigning in 2019 and it\u2019s finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/new-zealand-deal-accepted-gameover-campaign-update-from-craig-foster\/\">#GameOver<\/a>. Accepting the New Zealand offer is a small step to recovering Australia\u2019s humanity, and allowing refugees to live in safety and get on with their lives. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This is absolutely a historical moment in Australia. The power of people is stronger than politicians. The government couldn\u2019t resist this powerful pressure. Our consistency made this happen.<\/p>\n<cite>Mostafa (Moz) Azimitabar, former refugee held in offshore detention<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Australian federal budget included an increase in Australia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/campaigns\/raising-the-humanitarian-intake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanitarian program<\/a> to offer an additional 16,500 places over four years to those fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan. Amnesty\u2019s advocacy alongside communities from Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Ukraine to urge for additional humanitarian places for people seeking safety and the supporting public pressure have been recognised by the Home Affairs and Immigration Ministers. <br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/australia-raise-the-refugee-and-humanitarian-intake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign the petition<\/a> to hold the new Albanese Government to their promise to increase the Refugee and Humanitarian Program. Magai grabbed global attention through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/write-for-rights-2019-wrap-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Write for Rights 2019<\/a>, where almost 18,000 Australians contributed to over 750,000 global actions calling for his death sentence to be commuted. <br><br>Learn more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/campaigns\/end-the-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">End the death penalty campaign work<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>British-Iranian charity worker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/freenazanin-a-letter-to-my-sweet-daughter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe<\/a> was released after being unjustly imprisoned on trumped-up national security charges, a familiar tactic in Iran where she was detained. She was separated from her husband and daughter for six years. After being forcibly disappeared for 167 days, Ibrahim finally \u2018appeared\u2019 after being brought to the courts in Cairo. It provides a tool for people to use to pressure states to recognise the right in their national legislation, as well as for environmental human rights defenders who work tirelessly to protect their fellow human beings from the impact of environmental destruction.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/protect-the-torres-strait-with-climate-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign Amnesty\u2019s petition<\/a>, calling on the Australian Government to take real climate action now. While they haven\u2019t legislated this important reform yet, we\u2019re continuing to pressure them to hold firm to their commitment. The Northern Territory have just passed legislation to raise the age to 12, and while it\u2019s not the win we\u2019ve been campaigning for, it\u2019s a huge step in the right direction. It\u2019s an example to all states and territories that there\u2019s nothing stopping them from acting in the best interests of children and the community, and raising the age tomorrow. Amnesty has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/?s=raise+the+age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigned<\/a> to #RaiseTheAge since 2018 \u2014 it\u2019s because of the compassion and determination of supporters that the ACT have made this step and it\u2019s time for the rest of the country to follow suit. <br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/raise-the-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign the petition<\/a> to call on all remaining state and territory governments to commit to raising the age to 14. Kids belong in school and community, not prison. The video mentions briefings the Socceroos held with Amnesty, and was the first time a team has call for reforms, to improve the human rights of migrant workers and the LGBTQIA+ community in Qatar. Yulia was facing up to six years in prison under Russia\u2019s deeply homophobic \u2018gay propaganda\u2019 laws. In a country where state-sponsored homophobia and misogyny are the norm, Tsvetkova\u2019s trial was a landmark case.<\/p>\n<cite>Marie Srtuthers, Amnesty International\u2019s Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The UN established a landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/iran-landmark-un-fact-finding-mission-marks-long-awaited-turning-point-in-tackling-systematic-impunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fact-finding mission<\/a> to investigate and ensure accountability for human rights violations in Iran related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/australia-must-step-up-for-brave-iranians-like-mahsa-amini\/\">prot<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/australia-must-step-up-for-brave-iranians-like-mahsa-amini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/australia-must-step-up-for-brave-iranians-like-mahsa-amini\/\">sts<\/a> which erupted after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/6060\/2022\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">death in custody<\/a> of Mahsa Amini on 16 September, 2022, especially with respect to women and children. The protests have been met with a deadly crackdown by security forces using unlawful force. More than one million people signed Amnesty\u2019s petition to drive this win, including 10,000 in Australia. We called on Australia to support the motion, and Australia co-sponsored it.
