Against this backdrop of uncertainty, it\u2019s more important than ever that we all stand together &#8211; and celebrate the good news when it breaks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>People may need to be physically distant right now, but we are always united in our humanity. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 20 human rights wins worth remembering, and celebrating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-usa\">USA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Colorado <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/press-releases\/colorados-abolition-of-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">abolishes the death penalty<\/a>, becoming the 22nd US state to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Scott Warren was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/scott-warren-found-not-guilty-court\">acquitted of charges<\/a> of \u201charboring\u201d migrants. Warren is both a geography professor, as well as an activist and volunteer for No More Deaths \u2013 an NGO that leaves emergency supplies for migrants crossing the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Scott-Warren-1-1024x512.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Scott-Warren-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Scott-Warren-1-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Scott-Warren-1-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Scott-Warren-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ethiopia\">Ethiopia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/afr25\/1471\/2019\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Firew Bekele<\/a> was released without charges; as well as 3 of 5 journalists arrested under \u2018terrorism proclamation\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-france\">France<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2019\/11\/france-man-who-gave-tea-to-migrants-acquitted-of-baseless-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pierre Mumber<\/a> was acquitted after helping four West African asylum seekers. He was convicted of \u201cfacilitating irregular entry\u201d after offering them hot tea and warm clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-palestine\">Palestine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Photojournalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde15\/1336\/2019\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mustafa al Kharouf <\/a>was freed after 9 months in an Israeli prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0126_Original-1-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0126_Original-1-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0126_Original-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0126_Original-1-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0126_Original-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nicaragua\">Nicaragua<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>13 activists who were arrested for providing water to families arbitrarily detained, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/amr43\/1762\/2020\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released.<\/a> They still however face charges, so the campaign for their freedom continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nigeria\">Nigeria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prisoners of conscience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2019\/11\/nigeria-sowore-bakare-and-jalingo-declared-prisoners-of-conscience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare<\/a> were freed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pakistan\">Pakistan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights defender and Professor, Muhammad Ismail, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/asa33\/1514\/2019\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received bail after a month jailed<\/a> for his efforts to support his daughter &#8211; women\u2019s rights defender Gulalai Ismail. However, he still remains at risk of a lengthy prison sentence as charges against him have not been dropped. We continue to call for all charges against him to be dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0130_Original-1-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0130_Original-1-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0130_Original-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0130_Original-1-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0130_Original-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uzbekistan\">Uzbekistan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Blogger and human rights defender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/resources\/outcome-nafosat-olloshkurova-released\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nasofat Olloshkurova was freed from a psychiatric institution<\/a> where she had been held forcibly after reporting on a peaceful protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vietnam\">Vietnam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>the death sentence of H\u1ed3 Duy H\u1ea3i was suspended, and his mother Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Loan sent a message of thanks to Amnesty activists: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Thank you for saving my son&#8217;s life, no words could describe my sincere gratitude to all of you<\/p>\n<cite>Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Loan<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Ho-Duy-Hai-1-1024x512.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Ho-Duy-Hai-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Ho-Duy-Hai-1-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Ho-Duy-Hai-1-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Ho-Duy-Hai-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnamese activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/tran-thi-nga-released-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tr\u1ea7n Th\u1ecb Nga was also released from prison<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tr\u1ea7n Th\u1ecb Nga was released in January, after having served three years of a nine year prison sentence. She has since safely arrived in the USA along with her partner and two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myanmar\">Myanmar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/min-htin-ko-ko-gyi-freed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi was released from prison. <\/a>He was detained in 2019 because of Facebook posts criticising the role of the military in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Court of Justice also ordered Myanmar to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/01\/myanmar-world-court-orders-myanmar-protect-rohingya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018provisional measures\u2019 <\/a>to prevent genocidal acts against the Rohingya people. The International Criminal Court (ICC) opened an investigation into their forcible deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bangladesh\">Bangladesh<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The government announced it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/01\/bangladesh-rohingya-children-get-access-to-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provide education to half a million Rohingya refugee children<\/a> who have been deprived, since fleeing crimes against humanity in Myanmar in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0137_Original-1024x512.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0137_Original-1024x512.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0137_Original-300x150.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0137_Original-768x384.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0137_Original.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-qatar\">Qatar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2019\/10\/qatar-pledge-to-end-abusive-kafala-system-must-truly-transform-workers-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qatar announced the abolition of exit permits<\/a> for all workers including domestic workers on 16 January. Two exceptions remain, however, so the campaign is not yet over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sierra-leone\">Sierra Leone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2019\/12\/sierra-leone-regional-court-ruling-gives-hope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It was found in court<\/a> that the government ban on pregnant girls attending mainstream schools and sitting exams violates their human rights. It was ordered that the policy be revoked with immediate effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Sierra-Leone-girls-1024x512.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-646749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Sierra-Leone-girls-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Sierra-Leone-girls-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Sierra-Leone-girls-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Win-graphic_-Sierra-Leone-girls.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tanzania\">Tanzania<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>President Magufuli\u2019s government swore in new commissioners to the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance, two years after the previous office bearers had retired. This came one week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/afr56\/0301\/2019\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our report on repression<\/a> under his leadership.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-senegal\">Senegal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prominent activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/urgent-actions\/urgent-action-victory-activist-released-on-bail-senegal-ua-171-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Guy Marius Sagna<\/a> was released on bail after three months in a high security prison, for taking part in a peaceful protest about rising electricity prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-equatorial-guinea\">Equatorial Guinea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Activist Joaquin Elo Ayeto was freed without explanation, after being arbitrarily detained for almost a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I have been told of the work that you have done for me, and I want to thank the titanic effort by Amnesty International that has resulted in my release. I want to thank all the work that has been done to achieve my release<\/p>\n<cite>Joaquin Elo Ayeto <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-iran\">Iran<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tehran Appeals Court reduced the prison sentence of Yasaman Aryani from 16 years to 5 years and 6 months. We continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/action.amnesty.org.au\/act-now\/help-release-yasaman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call on Iran<\/a> to release Yasaman immediately and unconditionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffff00\">As a global movement of 10 million people, and 500,000 people in Australia, Amnesty International has the people power to build public support for a Human Rights Act.
